On this tour of the coastal towns of Aberdeenshire, we'll travel along the imposing cliffs of northeast Scotland, visiting its charming fishing villages.
At the designated time, we'll gather in front of the statue of William Wallace, eager to explore some of the most breathtaking villages in the region.
Our first destinations are the picturesque villages of Gardenstown and Crovie, perched on the distinct red sandstone cliffs that characterize the area. As we drive through these charming towns, we'll be treated to awe-inspiring views of the Scottish countryside and delve into their rich history.
Continuing our route, we'll visit Pennan, an enchanting fishing village with roots dating back to the 18th century. You may recognize this village as the iconic setting for the film Local Hero, starring Burt Lancaster. Nearby, we'll discover the scenic New Aberdour beach, where intriguing caves once served as smuggling hideouts. Unveiling the hidden side of Aberdeenshire's coastline, we'll unravel stories of clandestine activities.
Next, we'll make a stop in Fraserburgh, a town with a fascinating history. Did you know it boasts one of Scotland's earliest lighthouses and was once a castle? Prepare to be surprised as we walk through the town, marveling at its architecture, and witness the bustling seafood port, the largest in the region.
Our journey will take us along Cruden Bay, where we'll pause to explore the captivating ruins of New Slains Castle. Perched atop a cliff, these remnants date back to the 16th century and offer a glimpse into the area's storied past.
To conclude our adventure, we'll visit the charming port of Collieston, where we'll regale you with the legend of the smuggler Phillip Kennedy, adding a captivating final touch to our day.
After an enriching eight-hour tour of the coastal villages of Aberdeenshire, we'll return to our starting point in Aberdeen.
