By buying this ticket to Ipogeo MateraSum, you'll explore the underground city of the Sassi and discover its hidden treasures with an audio guide in English!
Located 39 feet (12 meters) underground and covering an area of 12916 square feet (1200 square meters), Matera's underground is a vast complex carved into tuff rock. Did you know that it was built by the ancient cave-dwelling civilizations of this region of Basilicata? They settled and lived there since Prehistoric times.
By purchasing a ticket to the Ipogeo MateraSum, you'll have the chance to visit an authentic underground city while listening to an audio guide in English. Discover all the fascinating facts about what life was like in this city!
On this tour, you'll learn about the distribution of underground spaces, see the streets, cisterns, places of worship, and houses, and explore the different layers of the settlement. Get ready to travel back in time!
You'll also see how they took advantage of the territory's characteristics when building the hypogeum and the techniques used to ensure air circulation and natural light in the underground spaces' interior.
The Ipogeo MateraSum is open daily from 10 am to 12:30 pm and from 3 pm to 5:30 pm. Final admission is at 5 pm.
You can access the hypogeum whenever you want within the opening times. Once you arrive, you'll be given an audio guide, and, from that moment, you'll have 30 minutes to enjoy the tour.
You can book up to 9 hours in advance if there are any seats left. Book now and guarantee your spot.
