Visit the Whitney Museum for an artistic journey in the heart of NYC. Explore the largest collection of 20th-century American art and captivating contemporary paintings.
Located along the Hudson River's edge, on Manhattan's western horizon, the Whitney Museum of American Art showcases over 26,000 pieces of contemporary art, a vivid blend of pictorial and sculptural treasures.
This institution was founded in 1930 through the vision of sculptor Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney. An esteemed patron of the arts, she passionately amassed a diverse collection, particularly favoring avant-garde works.
Despite her initial rejection by the Metropolitan Museum to showcase her work, Whitney's determination sparked her to curate her own exhibit. From this experience, the concept of her ever-evolving museum was born, a testament to her unwavering dedication to art.
Explore the work of over 3,000 artists from the US during your visit, including Berenice Abbott, Derrick Adams, Peter Agostini, Mary Ann Aitken, and Glen Earl Alps.
Moreover, the museum's terrace provides a stunning natural art display, offering a perfect vista of southern New York City's iconic skyline.
The Whitney Museum of American Art is open daily from 10:30 am to 6 pm, except on Tuesdays when it is closed.
