With this ticket to the archaeological site of Mycenae, you'll witness the artistic and architectural innovation of Mycenaean society. An unforgettable journey back in time!
On the Peloponnese peninsula lies one of the most important archaeological sites in Europe: Mycenae. This ancient city, home to the legendary kingdom of Agamemnon, gives its name to the Mycenaean period from 1600 to 1200 BC.
With this ticket, you'll be transported to the scenes from the pages of Homer's Iliad and Odyssey to discover all the secrets of one of the greatest centres of Greek civilisation. You'll cross the Lion Gate, the majestic entrance to the city, more than 3 metres (9.8 feet) high, crowned by a monolith with two lions facing each other.
From there, you'll pass the ruins of the royal Palace of Agamemnon and the Treasury of Atreus, also known as the Tomb of Agamemnon. This circular building is an emblem of Mycenaean architecture, characterised by the "Tholos" shape, like most Greek funerary monuments. You'll also see that Mycenae is surrounded by a great wall which, according to local tradition, was built by the Cyclops.
In addition, this ticket gives you access to the Archaeological Museum of Mycenae, where you can learn more about the importance of this city in the ancient world through its photographic exhibition. You'll learn about the history of the excavations that gave life to this space while you observe a collection of over 2500 objects from the Mycenaean civilisation.
The Mycenae Archaeological Site is open at the following times:
