Located at the foot of the Hill of Kronos and surrounded by the Alfeios and Kladeos rivers, the archaeological site of Olympia is one of the most important sites in Greece. In ancient times, this spectacular site was home to a significant sanctuary dedicated to Zeus, the father of the gods, and the venue for the Olympic Games.
Did you know that the history of the Olympics began in 776 BC? On this visit, you'll be able to delve into the origins of this famous competition while you visit outstanding areas such as the Gymnasium and the Palaestra, dedicated to the training of the athletes.
Nearby, from the arched gate through which hundreds of athletes passed, you'll enter the great Olympic Stadium, whose track is 212 metres (695 ft) long and 28.5 metres (93,5 ft) wide. It had a capacity for a whopping 50,000 spectators!
During your visit, you'll see the Temple of Zeus, which housed the statue of Zeus, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. You'll also be able to admire the remains of the Temple of Hera, where the altar of the Olympic flame is located.
